Born in some small rather secluded elven village/community nestled in some woods. One day when she was outside playing, she witnessed something she should have never seen… her supposedly dead great uncle, Abhorsen. Abhorsen was shot through with 30 poisoned arrows, decapitated, and burned at the stake (with all of his worldly possessions) for his many evil deeds a just before Lirael’s birth. His evil and prowess with dark magic were so well known and feared that his very name caused shivers in the good people who heard it. His deeds and any mention of them, public or private, were considered highly taboo. Apparently he had come to meet the niece that he had not gotten to meet in life and tell her his side of his story. At first Lirael did not know how to react/do/say. But as Abhorsen’s tale progressed, she got seriously freaked out and ran inside to her family. She told them that she just met her “Great Uncle Abhorsen?” and that he was outside trying to tell her his life story. Her family adamantly told her that she was mistaken, she couldn’t possibly have met/seen Abhorsen (he was dead!), and that she must NEVER, EVER say anything about him to anyone else. Unfortunately someone from the village just happened to pass by their home and overhear the conversation. (s)he then informed the village. The village came in an angry mob. They asked Lirael’s parents if what had been heard was true. The parents naturally denied it, but nervous little Lirael started to tell them about what and who she had so recently encountered. The villagers were horrified and frightened. They began to murmur and shout things about “EVIL” “DEMON” “CURSED” “POSSESSED?!?” “Not safe, KILL HER!!” etc. Sad and angry, Lirael’s parents kicked her out and she was forever banned/ostracized from her home village.

After that, Lirael fled deep into the woods and was looked after by her animal friends and a bit later a half elf companion. When she met her half elf companion she was “pre-teen” aged and he was 15 or 16. His name is Falada. Before meeting Lirael, Falada was a bit of an outcast who then chose to be a loner. He quickly became Lirael’s friend and mentor. They grew and traveled together for two to three decades give or take a couple years. In that time, the two youths intermingled from time to time with various civilized societies. Towards the end of Lirael’s adolescence, Falada found a place he became particularly enchanted with and chose to settle down. Lirael was not to ready to settle down long term in any particular society yet so she began to travel on her own. It was on her individual travels that she had many fights and other negative encounters with humans. Regardless, she often went back to visit her old friend Falada. As she matured, she continued to admire her Falada. Alas, by the time she neared adulthood, he was approaching middle age… So even though he was very fond of Lirael, as time passed he felt more and more like instead of being a brother-like figure to her he could have been like a father figure to her… and that troubled him. So on one of her visits he introduced her to a good acquaintance, Rowan, of his who was closer to her in age. Unlike Falada, Rowan could at least age with Lirael. Rowan was a reliable young elf who often worked with Lirael’s Falada. After some time Lirael warmed up to Rowan and accepted him as a good acquaintance. She began keeping up with him via letters along with Falada and seeing him when she came to visit. One of the times she came to visit, they went to a tavern where Lirael had a good time and got a bit tipsy…. and thus began the romantic part of her relationship with Rowan. Lirael still was not ready to settle down and Rowan was neither clingy or in a rush so Lirael left again soon after that evening to travel more on her own. She continued to visit every few years though.

On her travels, Lirael got word that Rowan was living/working in a small village/town near Highwater. Since she was not particularly busy and not too far away she thought she’d pop by for a surprise visit. Out of habit, she preferred to travel the woods by night. However, one evening as she was skirting a human village she got conked on the head (and sold to lizard people!). Then she thought she’d just be accompanying the rest of the party to Lagusson on one trip, after which she could split up and go see him. Then Highwater blew up and they had to flee. Thus Lirael joined the party that set out to survive and save the world…

Along her travels with the group, Lirael encountered an old Wolf friend in the woods. She called him Kiba (means fang)and took him along the journey as an animal companion. Together they made good memories foiling (and in Kiba’s case EATING) slave traders and pirates. In time, Lirael had the power to “grow” Kiba into a dire wolf. Unfortunately not long after his transformation, Kiba died in an underground earthquake during a fight with a dragon. Lirael was devastated and suffered a very guilty conscience about what she’d done to Kiba. She felt that although Felosial offered to revive Kiba, it would probably be much kinder to return his body and soul to the woods. At the first chance, Lirael and Felosial transformed/wildshaped into wolves to bury and say their final farewells to Kiba by howling at the moon. After the fiasco involving an animal companion, Lirael chose to try having a familiar instead. She chose a wild house cat she met in an oasis that the party had named “Ken.”
